School of Chronomancy
The school of Chronomancy is an esoteric branch of arcane magic focused on studying, and more importantly manipulating, the essential flow of cause and effect. Like their cousins in the school of divination, chronomancers believe that a little foreknowledge goes a long way. The advantages of studying chronomancy are manifold, and very much apparent. The disadvantages of studying the epic tug and flow of time itself are perhaps less apparent... though the mad, gibbering and wrecked minds of the many mages who have tried and failed may stand mute testimony to the curious.
Paradox
All things are fated, and woe betide the reckless chronomancer who ignores the inevitability of time's doom. Many abilities available to the chronomancer cause the mage to accumulate paradox, which is the ultimate force of consensual reality fighting back against the erstwhile time lord. A chronomancer has a maximum safe amount of paradox equal to:
- Paradox Limit = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
A chronomancer may exceed their paradox limit but doing so carries enormous risk. For each point of paradox that you exceed your paradox limit, the DM may roll on the Wild Surge table (as defined in the Wild Magic Sorcerer Origin), up to twice your paradox limit. If you exceed twice your paradox limit, you run the risk of suffering a Paradox Backlash, which can include visitation by furious inevitable outsiders, mad temporal clones, rogue timelines, permanent madness, or removal from the timestream.
You remove your Paradox Limit in paradox for every long rest.
Temporal Savant
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the time it takes to scribe a spell into your spellbook is halved.
Chronomagic
Additionally, at 2nd level, you gain the ability to temporally twist your spells to suit your needs. You gain two of the following Chronomagic options of your choice. You gain another one at 9th and 16th level. You can use only one Chronomagic option on a spell when you cast it, unless otherwise noted.
Chronostutter
You can send your spells a short distance into the future. When you cast a spell you can accumulate 1 paradox to cause the effect to delay to an initiative count of your choice, up to 1 full round in combat or up to 6 seconds out of combat. The effect originates from your point of casting, if applicable.
Quickened Spell
When you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 action, you can accumulate 2 paradox to change the casting time to 1 bonus action for this casting.
Temporal Dilation
When you cast a spell, you can accumulate 1 paradox to apply 1 round of temporal dilation to the target. The target is either accelerated gaining a bonus action immediately, or decelerated, immediately frozen in time. Unwilling targets are allowed a Charisma saving throw to resist at the DC of the original spell.
Time Twin
When you cast a spell that you can accumulate an amount of paradox equal to the spell’s level to repeat itself immediately with the exact same casting parameters (1 paradox if the spell is a cantrip).
Timeline Convergence
Beginning at 6th level, you can pull knowledge from versions of yourself in alternate realities and timestreams. Choose two spells, each from a spell list other than wizard. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. You always have these spells prepared on an alternate spell list. You may accumulate an amount of paradox to cast a spell from your alternate spell list equal to the spell level of the chosen spell. You can add an additional spell to your alternate spell list at 9th, 12th, and 15th level.
Impose Continuity
Starting at 10th level, when you cast a spell with a duration of 1 minute or longer, you can accumulate 1 paradox to repeat its duration. Each time you wish to renew the duration of the spell you must accumulate 1 paradox and you may not refresh your paradox limit while actively accumulating paradox in such a way.
Causal Paradox
Beginning at 14th level, you receive spells that one of your future selves sent backward through time. At any time, you can choose a spell of 5th level or lower and a casting time of one action or bonus action from your spellbook or alternate spell list and accumulate paradox equal to the spell level of the chosen spell. The effects of the spell spontaneously occur, with no action required. If the spell requires concentration, it immediately ends unless you mentally seize it and being concentration.
Once you use this feature, you enter causal debt and cannot refresh your paradox limit until you cast the chosen spell backwards in time at some point in the future. Since its effects have already occurred, it has no effect at the time of casting.
